Hello, my name is Lucas, and I am a 20 year old college student from Brazil. As far as I remember, i've always been a daydreamer, I love imagining things, and I consider myself to be a very creative person. One of my hobbies is playing tabletop RPGs, and I'm usually the dungeon master, so I'm the one who imagines the setting and create the situations for the other players to play in. Ever since i took up that hobby, I became very interested in worldbuilding, so I have an entire fantasy world inside my head that I've been "working on" or a few years now.
However, there is bad side to all of this: I spend a lot of time just daydreaming, and it gets in the way of me doing my chores and college assignments, therefore my academic performance has been suffering because of this. I take several hours to do a simple task because I get distracted all the time, and I keep walking in circles in my room, fantasizing about random stuff. To make matters worse, now I'm stuck at home because of the pandemic, being forced to take online classes and having to manage my own time.
I've been going to a therapist for almost a year now, and she thinks I have ADHD, but none of the medications make any difference in me. A couple weeks ago I found out about Maladaptive Daydreaming, and I think I'm going to ask her if she knows about this disorder. Did any of you had an success with treating it?
TL;DR: I'm very unproductive and my therapist thinks I have ADHD, but none of the medications work. I think I might have Maladaptive Daydreaming, and I'm curious if any of you had any sucess with treating this disorder.

welcome to the forum Lucas! As far as I know about symptoms of ADHD I think there are a lot of similarities with daydreaming. I have found people on the forum that have other mental problems like ADD and ADHD and they escape this reality through daydreaming. Doing it excessively cause Maladaptive daydreaming. I don't have such mental problems in depth so I cannot say much about that. Though there are others on the forum you can ask. You can put up a poll or thread asking about that, I think that will help you realize what is the actual problem and the cause of this daydreaming. Hope that will help you! Don't be discouraged and ask your therapist about this.

Excessive daydreaming is very very common with ADHD especially if you have the inattentive type. Have you asked to try a higher dose of the ADHD medication or even looked in to finding a therapist that specialises in ADHD or an executive function coach? It can take some time to find the right help so don't give up!
