I've only just clicked that this might be a facet of MDD, and I wonder if anyone else here has it, or is up for giving it a go and seeing what happens.
When I powernap, as I often do with my friends, I set my alarm for just TEN minutes. I will immediately start daydreaming consciously while resting, eyes shut, in bed.
But I find that by the time the timer has gone off, I have had a really strong typical, normal dream. I'm talking from the subconscious, not conscious. And from what I've looked up, that normally can take hours for someone to start experiencing.
My theory is that with everything being so comfy - bedsheets, pillow, someone being near me, I become completely at ease. Then, given that my eyes are shut, my brain just decides to 'go off on one', flicks the switch between consciousness and subconsciousness and shuts me down into deep sleep mode.
Try it and see- I often find it works quicker and better if i'm not in my own bed. - Ten / fifteen minutes MAX. - Shut your eyes and purposefully start one of your favourite daydreams. - But not one with you in it, because you might start going over emotionally triggering things that make you anxious and keep you alert. I often go for some superhero drama stuff.
Let me know what happened. Did you dream without directing the plot, did it stop being anything remotely related to the daydream? Do you feel refreshed, as I usually do?

I actually feel more triggered when I powernap at work, true. I'm not really triggered these days in general, but it comes up when I feel terribly sleepy in the office - then just any of the themes I usually consider "obsolete" starts working again.

I can't nap, I try but I just daydream the whole time. At night it takes me forever to fall asleep (because I'm daydreaming) but this does happen... if for some reason I wake before I completely fall asleep I notice that I'm half way between a daydream and a dream; my daydream started turning into a dream. Weirdly I almost never dream about my daydream characters or plots, once the switchover happens I either A) have zero memory of this first daydream dream or B) it flips quickly and completely and I'm not actually dreaming about the daydream.

You know I thought of this topic today when powernapping in the office and it worked exactly this way. I wouldn’t even think of that otherwise.
