Hi everyone,
Let me quickly introduce myself - my name is Thomas and I'm a Dutch documentary filmmaker based in London. Here's a link to my website: http://www.thomasrenckens.com
I think I've had a form of MD for pretty much as long a I can remember but I've only just recently found out it's a real thing. In my daydreams, I use elements from some of my favourite childhood books (for some reason, Roald Dahl's 'Matilda' and Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' are my main sources of inspiration) and create my own stories/experiences with them. Although I wouldn't say my MD has had hugely negative impacts on my life, there have been many times where I got lost in it for hours, and I would prefer to stay at home and daydream rather than meet up with friends.
My daydreaming has had a big effect on the kinds of documentaries I make - there's usually a strong element of fantasy in them, and I'm always interested in exploring people's thoughts and dreams. In the past, I've made a film about a woman who dreamt of becoming a professional mermaid, as well as a film about a North Korean refugee living with PTSD.
I'm currently a Directing Documentary student at the National Film & Television School in the UK, and I'm in the process of doing research for my graduation film. I'm exploring the idea of making a film about MD and would love to speak to some of you as I'm very interested in finding out how other people are living with it. For the film, I'm interested in exploring the darker aspects of it as well - I think it's important that MDD gets recognised as a disorder by the DSM.
Of course, I realise it's a sensitive subject and it can be hard opening up about your daydreams (I even feel a bit embarrassed telling you about my daydreams), but it you're up for having a chat with me, please do get in touch.
Feel free to send me a PM, or email me on renckensthomas@gmail.com.
Hope to hear from you soon!
All the best,
Thomas
