Hi! I'm trying to figure out what are some common things that many MDers do, so I'm going to list things that I personally do and if you could reply with your own list/comparisons/feedback or whatever you want, that would be great! It would be interesting if many of us had the same triggers or character types.
When I first started daydreaming: If I had to choose an age, I'd say around when I was 8, although I had a very active imagination before that.It was at age 8 that we moved internationally, and my parents were in desperate need of divorce. I had no friends and had just started to read books of my own choosing. I currently have several mental illnesses.
Music: edit audios. It's a good way for me to seperate my music taste from my daydreams, and doesn't let me get bored of the song. While I can daydream without music, it's more of just idle thinking, not maladaptive daydreaming. my daydreams are usually very short, probably around 10 seconds - a minute (at most) and are often formatted as if they are an edit, with very short snippets of action before the next scene.
Repetitive Motion: pacing. I used to snap my fingers too in time with the music, but now I fiddle with a rubber band.
How long I daydream each day: it depends. On a school day, 2-4 hours. Weekends, maybe 3-5. Holidays? 4-7 hours a day. when it's really bad, I can't focus in class, talk to people, walk around, anything. I just lay there crying, unable to pull my mind out of the world it's in. I would say about 35% of my mind is daydreaming at any given time.
Contents of daydreaming: I first got into a specific fandom back in July of last year. Ever since then it's been the only thing I daydream about. Looking back, I can see that my daydreams have always centered around fandoms of books or tv shows. Movies, fanfics, etc all give me inspiration for my daydreams. I'm not ever a character in my daydreams. One of the characters from the fandom I made into my MC. I changed his looks, personality, nearly everything about him until he was almost a different person altogether. I built a world around him made of supporting characters, some canon and many OC. I have never had any trouble visualising places to, they sort of naturally form around the characters and over the course of multiple daydreams I'll slowly expand and create a whole house/location. My daydreams are never about daily life. All of my daydreams are centered around events or people from MCs past coming to light, where his friends/team sees the events (via video, etc) or people and learning more/being surprised by the MC. I have also noticed that my MC usually has a past in sex work, although the specifics of this change each daydream. I have many different daydreams I can choose to go to on demand. some are no longer engaging to me and others have lasted me literal years.
What helps me: strong smells, and podcasts or lofi music. I've also noticed that if I'm in a stressful situation (e.g. a giant family fight) that's one of the few times that my mind isn't at least slightly daydreaming. I have a document where I write down my daydreams if they become too unbearable, and it helps lessen the pressure in my mind. It's currently around 200 pages long, and I just start a new page for every daydream. Some are a dozen pages long, some are only a paragraph or two. If i actually like the story and not just the daydream, sometimes I'll go back and add more around the main daydream that I had already written in detail.
Anyways yeah that's me, I'd love if anyone would answer the sections in bold and maybe we could see if anyone has similarities with one another.
