I'm Cadence. I don't think I have maladaptive daydreaming, but I do have characters in my head who are very important to me, I talk to them and they talk back. I'm how real they are. I really need help, I'm dealing with many mental health diagnoses and self harming as well as difficulty as home. I just need someone to talk to :( My people (I call them people because they have distinct appearances and personalities, and they don't like to be referred to as characters) have been with me since the start of a very difficult period in my life. I had few friends, I was sexually assaulted and very lonely. From there it just got worse. I'm nineteen now and I want to be able to go to college without my six year old popping out to tell the teachers how much she likes their voices. I also meet the criteria for OCD, anxiety, depression and BPD, and a doctor has suggested I have symptoms of PTSD as well. Can someone with these conditions please help me out? I feel so alone.

Welcome to the forum, Cadence! First off, if you’re experiencing, for lack of a better term, multiple personalities that essentially take control of your body, that’s definitely not MD, though plurality can arise from MD. I would suggest looking into DID (dissociative identity disorder) if you want a professional diagnosis. However, plurality is not always disordered, and many plural systems resent being labeled as disordered. I have a plural friend who suggests looking at this website for more info: morethanone.info/

Dear Sam, thank you so much for your reply. No, I don't have DID, they don't take control of my body, although I regress a lot and go back to being a very young child. What did you mean that 'plurality can arise from MD'? I didn't understand. Can you have parts in BPD? cause that's what I feel most comfortable identifying myself as. I'm a psychology student and I've done lots of research, but I can't find anything on the topic.

As I’m not plural myself, I can’t be 100% sure of how that would work, but I would assume that given the right circumstances, the altered self characters in your maladaptive daydreams could end up as different individuals in a plural system. This resource might make understanding plurality a bit more: pluralityresource.org/plurality-information/
