New Daydreamer

So I’m B I’m 22 and I’ve been doing this thing of daydreaming since I can remember. My family would make fun of me for it growing up and my mother would yell at me for doing it. Saying only crazy people do that and tried to make me stop. So now I do it in private. In the bathroom tends to be the place now and I don’t know if I can control it but it happens for at least 30 mins at a time.
I found this group because after 22 years and doing an undergrad in psychology I finally felt it was time to google this and I found this forum and people saying they do everything I’ve been doing. I cried I was so overwhelmed.
Sometimes I know I definitely can’t control it. Music seems to be what sets it off sometimes. Depends on the music and my mood I think. It honestly wouldn’t bother me if I could control it more but I don’t think I can. I don’t get the urge to do it when I’m being active. Like working or at the gym or anything like that. But I’m very introverted so it can be very emotionally draining to keep that busy all the time. I just worry about it getting worse. I want to learn to control it. I want to know if it can disappear and will I ever be normal. Can I have a normal life with it?

Welcome to the forum! Its good that you were able to take that step to learn more about what is going on. Truthfully, I don't think you can ever get rid of it completely, nor do I think that you'd want to. Daydreaming is a natural occurrence that can be quite beneficial in the right situations. It just when it gets to be obsessive that it becomes a problem. I'm not sure getting rid of the urges is likely either. After all, what goes in your brain stays in. But that can be good, because it means that you can learn to look at your urges and the daydreaming that follows in a different light, and that can lead to change. Possibly the best idea would be to learn to feel the urges and to stay with that feeling instead of acting on it. Mindfulness is probably the best way to cultivate that skill.

Welcome to the forum. I don't think MD can ever disappear but I do think it can be controlled so that it doesn't interfere with our lives so much.
