First a bit of introduction. I have only recently found about MD through googling myself basically. I alaways had this feeling that there was a glitch in my brain, something that made.me think.different to others but I had no name for it up until now. What I want to is post some questions I have for you along with my answers to them. Essentially I want to be able to compare other people's experience of MD with my own. I think others that ebcounter this thread might find it useful too.
1. The age at which you started daydreaming? I was daydreaming since I was born I think since I do not recall a time in my life I wasn't doing it.
2. Daydream content. Is it based on real life or something you saw? With you as a central character or somene else? I modtly use myself as aa central character and daydreams are even split between real life and shows I have watched.
3. Do you go on auto-pilot while day dreaming? When caught in a daydraming I became unaware of.my surroundings and see what I imagine. I can even walk and run around the room unintentionally and not be aware of it. However I have never fallen,hit into something or got into any sort of accident. It is like.my body is aware of where it is but my. ind is not hence the term autopilot.
4.Do you feel irrestible pull to your daydreams when encountering triggers? I sometimes fall into daydream wihtout meaning to because I cannot help myself.
6. Do things seep into daydream world on their own? This is difficult to explain but certain people and shows click with the daydream world and become part ofnitbor basis for it but others just do not and I cannot incorporate them.no matter how hard I try.

1. The age at which you started daydreaming? I think it started when I was 10 years old, after reading Harry Potter for the first time, it was my first trigger. Before that my daydreaming wasn't really maladaptive, it was just play pretend games i guess.
2. Daydream content. Is it based on real life or something you saw? 99% based on fiction (books, movies, shows, comics...). The 1% left is just small spontaneous daydreams about reality which don't last more than a few minutes usually.
3. Do you go on auto-pilot while day dreaming? Sometimes, yes. I almost got ran over by a car last week because of that and I often start talking or smiling to myself in public spaces without realising it, which is awkward.
4.Do you feel irresistible pull to your daydreams when encountering triggers? Definitely, when I've found a new trigger, the new story/character/plot it creates is all I can think of.
6. Do things seep into daydream world on their own? I see what you mean by that and yes it happens. Some elements are always part of my daydreams and I don't really know why. It doesn't bother me though. Some things just click and become part of the story as if it were the missing puzzle piece. But just like you there are some things I absolutely want to include but that never feel quite right so I give up.

1. Since little. If I try to remember, maybe 4 years old. But it become maladaptive at 14 years old, and later just knew it around 18 years old.
2. Both. Real life or fictions that I saw. Usually it sync up and making whole new event
3. Probably. Usually in activities that doesn't require too much concentration.
4. Yes, unless I was in total tense mood.
5. Not really. Only some events that might enriching my main daydreaming

They are ultimately based in books and have nothing to do with me. It’s basically the second generation of characters in books that come together into a single plot. 3. I pace around my room and am semi-aware of my surroundings. I bump into things a lot. My pace fluctuates when I am really into it, otherwise I tend to go with the music. 4. My triggers are barely triggers. Music is a trigger I guess but it is a nessecity in order to pace. I tend to daydream sitting still, that can be very difficult to fight when I am supposed to be listening to a teacher or working in class. 5. Some books or shows will give me ideas and I incorporate a similar plot line throughout the story. That is why I have trouble sitting through a movie because I want to pace and let it inspire me. When I watch a show or YouTube I am always eating or multitasking because I have no desire to watch it otherwise. |

1 atleast before the age of 10. I dont remember before that the age i exactly started.
2 my worlds are like sequals to my favourite animes tv programes one is based on a night dream though.
3 i have the autopilot ability too. I first step back and forth listening to music to initiate the daydream however when i get into the daydream after about 10 seconds im doing it automatically. Even when i used to pace or run back and forth in my room i pritty much hardly ever injured myself. I reckon my subconcous is responsible for the autopilot ability.
4 im at the point where i can actively choose to daydream most of the time however theres been times i tryed to watch the news become inspired by whats on it and ended up dding and missing the rest of the news. I listen to music as a tool to help trigger myself to daydream though.
5 i like taking the lyrics from songs that sound like my characters and making them mean something about my characters. For example after hearing owl citys song fireflys i came up with the character geramy. The songs lyrics refer to being an insomniac so i made geramy an insomniac. In the music video theres all sorts of toys on the floor so i made it geramy likes playing with childrens toys which he leaves scattered on the floor in his flat and that he has a child like fun loving personality thus why he likes playing with toys. I even made up hes a singer that sings the song fireflys and has a keyboard he plays just like in the fireflys music video.

I love your idea of collecting this information for everyone. Here’s another data point:
1. I've daydreamed for as long as I can remember. However, it’s only been maladaptive for the past 3-4 years.
2. Mine are usually based on fiction–novels, video games, anime/manga, etc. I’ve also had some daydreams based in the realm of celebrity, which is technically reality, but at the same time, separate from it. I also used to daydream about events and people in my immediate reality, but it caused some problems, so I don’t let myself do it anymore. All my daydreams revolve around an idealized version of myself who is just similar enough for me to feel a connection, but different enough to be everything I wish I was.
3. When I daydream, I’m still aware of my physical surroundings–I’d be able to describe them to you in full. But I don’t pay attention to them and I can’t complete physical tasks that take a lot of concentration.
4. I used to, but now, daydreams only come with a bit of mental effort on my part. I sometimes feel a "pull" to my fantasy world, but I'm often able to resist it.
5. If I want to incorporate an idea into my daydream world, it usually works out somehow. Sometimes it’s effortless and sometimes it takes more effort and creativity. But I don't recall ever having elements that entered and stayed in my daydreams without my permission.

Answer to number 3! Because all the other answers for me are pretty much the same as the typical MD. Going on auto pilot and not knowing my surroundings happens to me wayyyyy to offten. I get so into my day dreams sometimes I just seem to black out! Especially while walking. I’ll arrive at my destination with no memory of anything or anyone I saw on the way there.

I have been daydreaming my whole life, however it had begun to become a problem when I was thirteen. 2. My daydreams are also split between real life and worlds from shows, books or films. I am always the main character, however it isn't me completely, if that makes sense? It's me if I were how I wanted to be basically. 3. I do go on autopilot, the closet I've ever gotten to an injury is I walked into a sign, but I'm usually subconsciously aware of my surroundings. 4. Definitely, I sometimes have to focus on not daydreaming the pull gets so intense. I'll be out in public and all I can think is 'Don't daydream, don't daydream, don't daydream' over and over again. 5. Yeah I do find that often, and a lot of scenes (or whatever you want to call them) are unplanned and I can later link them back to something I saw, if that makes sense? |

It makes sense about the character because what I am in daydreams is me the way I would like myself to be too with some traits a bit altered. |

It has been rarely anyone except me. It always were me being part of center of attention. It is real life. When i were young they were fictitious.

I usually daydteam lying down on couch or sitting someplace. But i do forget the world around me. Nowadays it is hard to understand if the current me is part of a long dream or a real reality.

My triggers are not something i can control, its almost always external- people, their thoughts about my work and me overthinking(incompetency-my problem really), scoldings (more like true words of parents), good times which i want to sustain as daydreams. so, yeh more or less irresistible

When I was little, though, I tended to more often "act out" daydreams by making believe--running around pretending to be a character, playing with toy animals, etc. In my teen years this evolved into pretending to be my characters talking to each other on tape, riding my bike around, and writing fiction. As a young adult I would pace and move around to music. Now it's almost exclusively writing, and just zoning out. 2. Daydream content. Is it based on real life or something you saw? With you as a central character or somene else? I modtly use myself as aa central character and daydreams are even split between real life and shows I have watched.It's almost always my characters acting out scenes from my writing. I almost never daydream about myself except a bit of wish-fulfillment here and there, and I don't count that as actual daydreaming since it's just me envisioning what I wish would happen and isn't creative at all. I HATE including myself in my fantasies, so I live vicariously through my characters. I also have no interest in daydreaming about others' characters/stories; just mine. 3. It is like.my body is aware of where it is but my. ind is not hence the term autopilot.I can zone out while just sitting or standing and daydreaming (I have an ostomy and have to self-catheterize throughout the day, and I often find myself washing up and putting away the equipment afterwards with no memory of actually catheterizing myself  ), though when I used to pace around to music and stuff I was still aware of my surroundings, never ran into or tripped over anything or wandered off track or any such. 1. I've been doing it all my life. Probably it started when I was in kindergarten.
2. I don't appear in my daydreams. My daydream tends to be realistic and my characters live pretty ordinary lives. But maybe I just want to experience life vicariously through them. Because I have Asperger, I've always been some sort of a misfit and I've always wanted to live a "normal" life like most people.
3. I still retain some awareness of my surrounding, but it's like I'm both and neither in real life or my daydream, if that makes sense?
4. Yes. DDing is to me a coping method. When I experience something that triggers my mental illnesses, I DD to escape.
5. Sometimes things that I encounter in real life will appear in my DD. Sometimes deliberately, sometimes they just appear. I have difficulty focusing on fiction and films because they give me new ideas for my DDs.

Is it based on real life or something you saw? With you as a central character or someone else? It's usually never me as I truly am. Sometime's in an idealized version of myself. For the most part it's the main character of a show and their setting- with their personality and all untouched. 3. Do you go on auto-pilot while day dreaming? Absolutely. I even have simple puzzle games like candy crush and tetris to stim while I'm off daydreaming. 4.Do you feel an irresistible pull to your daydreams when encountering triggers? All the time, and I really wish I could stop. It gets in the way of my normal life. I'm not even sure what is my trigger, it just happens randomly and consistently. 6. Do things seep into daydream world on their own? Embarrassingly yes hahaha. There's so many crossovers in my dreamland, sometimes there's even the most unlikely of cross overs, like aliens with magical girls.
