Let me quickly introduce myself – my name is Thomas and I’m a Dutch documentary filmmaker based in London. In the past, I’ve made documentary programmes for channels like the BBC, Discovery Channel, and Vice. For more info, see my website: www.thomasrenckens.com
I’m currently doing an MA in Directing Documentary at the National Film & Television School, and I’m in the process of doing research for my graduation film. For the film, I’ll work with a whole team, e.g. a producer, editor, cinematographer, sound designer, composer, etc. so it’s a big production. The school’s films are shown on film festivals worldwide, as well as on UK television.
My films generally evolve around people’s thoughts, dreams, and fantasies. In the past, I’ve made a film about a girl dreaming to become a professional mermaid, and a film about a North Korean refugee suffering from PTSD. I think it’s the fact that I’ve had MD my entire life which draws me to these themes.
For my grad film, then, I’m very keen to explore the idea of making a film about MD. I think it’s important to raise awareness about the existence of MD – as many people are still unaware about the disorder, and how serious it can be.
I’ve already been in touch with Eli Somer and he’s very open to taking part in the film. I’m keen to find out more about other people’s experiences with MD, and I’m particularly interested in speaking to individuals based in the UK (but of course also very open to speaking to people elsewhere in the world).
If you’re happy to speak to me, feel free to send me a PM, or e-mail me on firstname.lastname@example.org
Of course, if you have any questions at all, feel free to ask!
I actually JUST got of the phone with Thomas and he's super cool. Definitely recommend giving him an hand and setting up a Skype conversation or something. He's just gathering background info right now to develop an idea of what he wants to do with the film, so it's a very casual conversation and zero obligation, you don't have to go on-record or even give him your real name lol.
