Many people have crushes on celebrities; and there are people who, like someone here, daydream about them. But there are also people who develop an insane obsession on them, sometimes to the point of hurting or killing. These kind of obessions don't involve just celebs, but also ordinary people who get harassed, hurt or murdered by someone who is insanely obsessed by them. Stalkers are a typical example. I think that this kind of people, who can no more distinguish reality from fantasy, have MD too, a kind of MD that goes terribly wrong and degenerates into obsession. What do you think about it? Should we call this MMD ("Malignant Maladaptive Daydreaming") or something alike?

I've no doubt that many of them probably have the immersive daydreaming trait I wouldn't put the two in the same category. It's because we can so clearly see the difference that sets us apart.

I think that if someone stalks or hurts a person it's usually because of control issues, emotional issues, etc. Sometimes there is a daydream component and the person can't tell what is real and what isn't anymore. This isn't MDD, this is some type of schizoid disorder (I'm about the exact terminology). My point is, if someone becomes obsessive to the point of stalking or hurting a person, there is another mental health problem present that is much more serious than MDD. I know there are some obsessive aspects to MDD, but I don't see that as being any different from what fans of a show, band or celebrity would do. It's possible that some people with MDD would cross that line and stalk or hurt someone, but I think 99% of people with MDD won't cross that line and MDD in itself isn't a cause or gateway to hurtful obsessive behaviors.
