Do you always daydream while listening to music? I recently asked my (normal) friend if he imagined things while listening to music. He said he would only do that if a song brought a memory (which doesn't really count as daydreaming). If he has no memory to remember, he simply enjoys the music. This is something I find difficult to understand. Does anybody here know how to simply enjoy the music? Can you listen to a song and not daydream at the same time?

I can occasionally listen to music without daydreaming (or at least without getting too involved in the daydream, so its like a video playing in the background instead of a scene that I'm actually in). I can't remember a time when listening to music DIDN'T usually trigger daydreams, even before my daydreaming became maladaptive. I think that it depends on the type of music. I'm much more likely to daydream if the music is either emotional or psychologically stimulating (like adrenaline-causing and stuff). Its easier for me to remain present if the music is, say, mellow oldies, instead of electronic or rock and roll. I've heard some suggestions about focusing on your breath while listening to music in order to stay in the present moment and have had some success with that method myself. Overall though, music is one of my, if not literally the, main triggers and I can't see that really ever disappearing.

It's hard for me to not daydream to music especially if it's something I've daydreamed to before. It puts me right back into that mindspace and world.
I also find I get annoyed and stressed if, for example, my husband plays Beastie Boys radio when we're in the car and I can't daydream to that. I think he was on to me after I confessed my MDD to him and I always picked the same couple of stations, of which Beastie Boys was NOT one lol

I find music having specific lyrics and themes helps deter daydreaming. If the meaning of the music is open ended, it becomes too easy to impose your own meaning.

I try to refocus myself on the music and have the lyrics up so i have a visual to focus on to bring me back to the music instead of day dreaming!!! I hate that most of the time i cant listen to music without day dreaming!!!

I hate that most of the time i cant listen to music without day dreaming!!! Me too!!! I hate most of my triggered-by-music daydreams as much as I love my not-triggered-by-music daydreams. I'd love to get rid of them. I'd love to simply enjoy the music like normal people usually do. *sighs*

I’ve never been able to just listen to the music. I can’t even imagine what that feels like. When I was a kid I would lock myself in my room and blast music to daydream. As an adult, I walk around with headphones, even if I’m the only one home. I become extremely anxious if I go somewhere and forget my headphones. I haven’t listened to music in days because I’m trying to stop but it feels impossible right now

I take my earphones everywhere I go, and I have a panic attack when I forget them. I can't ever remember being able to just listen to music either.

Even if I somehow manage to completely overcome MD and finally move on, where would I even start with finally being able to develop at least some actual taste in music/art/fashion/literature? Why didn’t I let myself have a personality?😂😭
Ahem, sorry, I’ll calm down.

I can only daydream to music when I'm listening with headphones so I always have my headphones with me and I listen to music whenever I have the chance to. I also find that I can only daydream to music that is very happy and upbeat, but I can't really daydream to or slow music because I always feel like the music is too slow for my thoughts? I don't know, I can't really describe it. *Sorry for my English, not my first language

Maybe I need to stop that so that I can start having a more positive attitude instead of daydreaming things that upset me.

Usually I don't listen to music while daydreaming. If I do it's more like a best-of/movie-trailer kind of daydream and something I do deliberately to get that dream. For example if my "crew" has finished an adventure, first impressions of a new land/ship/station...
I don't like listen to music with lyrics in a language I can understand, because my dreams don't match the words. So it's either instrumental or in a foreign language.

I constantly do this. I don’t remember a time where I haven’t done that. Now if it’s softer music for me to play when I’m trying to go to sleep (for instance low fi or some jazz), than I just simply enjoy the music but it’s only for occasions like that.
