Hi there, everyone!
My name is Alex. I actually just discovered this forum a day or two ago and decided to make an account. It's nice to meet all of you.
I'm an anthropology student at Grand Valley State University, and one of my big passions is people research. I graduate in the winter, and then I'm off into the world of social science.
I'm also an avid writer for Dungeons and Dragons. I've been doing that for a few years now, and I put a lot of detail into designing people, places, and settings that my players can work through. Growing up, I was always making stories in my head to act out and have fun with. Turning that into writing was just a natural progression, I suppose. One thing that I'm noticing now, unfortunately, is that it's starting to take up a significant portion of my time and thoughts. It's fun. Really fun. But it's starting to get in the way of work.
I heard about maladaptive daydreaming just recently. I was surprised to find out that ADD or ADHD is commonly linked to MD, because I was just recently diagnosed with ADD, myself. I've been taking adderall, which has been helping a lot when it comes to sitting down and focusing, but I've been having issues committing to meaningful work, like writing my ethnographic reports. These need to be professional-grade now that I'm moving forward in my career, but I always slip away from it into my writing and daydreaming. It's been tough, and I can't really afford to do that once I have a job.
I plan on talking with my therapist next week about maladaptive daydreaming, so I haven't gotten a formal diagnosis yet. That being said, it would make a lot of sense as to why I slip away from my work and spend all my time in my thoughts, having fun in imaginary worlds I've made. Oops, I'm out of space. I hope to get to know some of you on here!
