I've only just realised I have this disorder and it's kind of scary. I'm beginning to get confused between reality and fantasy, even it's more of a nightmare. I can't move forward in my life because I don't even know where I am in life. Day dreaming has become my friend. What will do without it?

Hey, do you want to talk this out? If so, would you be comfortable sharing a social media account so that we could talk it through? I used to believe this was a scary thing too, and it began to overwhelm me before I finally made peace with it. I'd love to help out a fellow daydreamer

Welcome to the forum! I know that realizing you have this can be scary, but we're here to help you through it.
Figuring out who you are after spending years in a different world, often as a different person, can be very hard, frustrating, and time consuming. I would recommend starting small.
You don't have to imagine a life completely without daydreaming if you don't want. Daydreaming is something that's natural and necessary for creativity and problem solving--and yeah, sometimes as a coping mechanism. In general, I would consider the goal to be to reestablish a healthy balance between real life and daydreams; whatever that might look like for you.

I'd love to help out a fellow daydreamer :) It's probably easier to private message people through the forum. Plus it can help protect people's anonymity if that's something they're worried about. You can click the "PM" button at the top of someone's post, or you can go into the messages page using the navigation bar and create or respond to messages there.

I can't move forward in my life because I don't even know where I am in life. Day dreaming has become my friend. What will do without it? A lot of people with MD are usually aware of what is fantasy and what is reality. Are you sure you don't have a different dissociative disorder? Daydreams for MDers tend to be pleasant, as a way of escaping reality and what makes it maladaptive is the fact that it can get in the way of real life.
It sounds like you might be experiencing something more severe, something that can be diagnosed by a healthcare professional. I hope you find the help you need.

Hmm, like thehopelessromantic already said, this sounds like something a professional should look at. Nothing to be scared about, with the right kind of help you can manage this, don't worry. Are you already in any kind of treatment, maybe for something else?

Hey Candice,
I'm glad you have found this community. You are not alone, and we are all happy you are here. I have to agree with the hopeless romantic, you might want to discuss this with a psychologist. That being said, if possible, I would maybe email him or her first to figure out their understanding and views on MD disorder before meeting him or her. I say this because of how some with MD disorder are diagnosed wrongly with schizophrenia or another disorder. MD is gaining popularity in the scientific community, but not everyone knows, understands, or even believes in this disorder. I wish you the best. Feel better :)
